The 6th Asia-Oceania Symposium for Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering in Beijing, China

The cool autumn breeze and the sweet fragrance of osmanthus flowers greeted the successful holding of the 6th Asia-Oceania Symposium for Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering (AOFSM’6) from October 16th to 18th, 2025. The symposium was jointly organized by Beijing University of Chemical Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, and the Asia-Oceania Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering Society. It was held in a hybrid format with the main venue in Beijing and a sub-venue in Hefei. The event attracted over 490 experts, scholars, and industry representatives from more than 100 universities and research institutions across 28 countries and regions worldwide.

On the morning of October 17th, the 6th Asia-Oceania Symposium for Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering officially opened. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Zhang Sheng, co-chair of the conference and from Beijing University of Chemical Technology. At the beginning of the conference, Vice President Wang Feng of Beijing University of Chemical Technology delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the university. He first extended a warm welcome to the guests from home and abroad. Vice President Wang Feng stated that fire safety materials are of great significance to life safety, green low-carbon and advanced manufacturing. Beijing University of Chemical Technology will fully support the construction of the AOFSM international academic exchange platform and wishes the conference a complete success.

Subsequently, Prof. Hu Yuan from the University of Science and Technology of China, as the co-chair and initiator of this conference, systematically reviewed the development history and remarkable moments of AOFSM since its establishment in 2015. The Asia-Oceania Symposium for Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering was jointly founded by scientists from multiple countries in the Asia-Ocean region. Its core objective is to build an international academic platform dedicated to fire safety materials research and application. The first conference was held by the University of Science and Technology of China in Suzhou, and subsequent conferences were successfully held in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Qingdao, and Sydney by universities and research institutions in the Asia-Ocean region respectively, with the scale and influence continuously expanding. Prof. Hu Yuan pointed out that AOFSM has become one of the most influential academic exchange platforms in the global fire safety materials field, effectively promoting scientific research cooperation and technological innovation within the Asia-Ocean region and globally.

Academician Wang Yuzhong from Sichuan University, as a special guest, delivered a speech. He stated that Chinese scholars have initiated and organized two major international conferences, namely the "International Symposium on Flame Retardant Materials and Technologies (ISFRMT)" and the "Asia-Oceania Symposium for Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering (AOFSM)", which have established a regular and highly efficient academic exchange platform for scholars from both domestic and international communities. This has effectively promoted global dialogue and cooperation in the field of fire safety materials research.

During the three-day conference schedule, there were 10 plenary presentations, 33 invited presentations, 28 oral presentations, 24 young oral presentations, and 121 poster displays. A total of 205 abstracts were included. The experts and scholars attending the conference conducted in-depth discussions on topics such as flame retardant mechanisms, new flame retardant systems, fire safety evaluation methods, and the application of fire safety materials in fields like aviation, construction, and new energy. The young scholars forum and poster session were among the highlights of the conference, and a number of innovative and promising research results were presented.

After a joint review by the Academic Committee and the Organizing Committee, 16 outstanding poster awards were selected, demonstrating the vitality and potential of young researchers in the field of fire safety materials.

On the afternoon of the 18th, the 6th Asia-Oceania Symposium for Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering came to a successful conclusion. Professor Zhang Sheng, on behalf of the organizing committee, expressed sincere gratitude to all the participating experts, scholars, volunteers, sponsors and cooperating universities at the closing ceremony. Prof. Hu Yuan announced that the next Asia-Oceania Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering Symposium will be held at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2027, and handed over the flag to the president of the next conference, Professor Fei Bin.

As an influential international academic exchange platform in the field of fire safety materials science and engineering in the Asia--Oceania region, the Asia--Oceania Symposium for Fire Safety Materials Science and Engineering has been dedicated to promoting academic collaboration, technological innovation and industrial transformation in the field of fire safety materials since its establishment. It has played a significant role in deepening international cooperation, fostering disciplinary development and driving industrial upgrading. This year's symposium continues to uphold the core principle of "building a high-level academic exchange and cooperation platform and promoting interdisciplinary research and international collaboration", focusing on the latest research results, technological innovations and industry development trends in the field of flame retardant and fireproof materials. It has provided an important bridge for experts and scholars in the global field of fire safety materials science and engineering to exchange ideas and connect resources.
